There are 90+ url shortening services out there. I have been using is.gd mainly because it has a simple widget sitting in my Mac Dashboard. However, I’m switching to bit.ly from now onwards. Reason? It does everything is.gd does plus link tracking. Basically, it tracks stats like how many clicks the url received, where those clicks came from, when those clicks happened, and what country was the user who clicked located.
What have I learned from them? Study your users, know who they are, understand what they use your service for, and make your service serve them better. Winning will follow automatically.
Bit.ly knows their users are mainly bloggers and webmasters who use its service to post links in Twitter. What do these users care about? Stats.
